When shopping for a dog bed, consider the size, health and needs of your dog. Bed are available in many different styles, including pillows, mats, rugs and cuddlers. Pillows are big, thick cushions; mats are thinner than pillows; and rugs are the thinnest. A cuddler is like a pillow with sides, so your dog can curl up and be supported on three or four sides. There are also luxury dog sofas and beds, which are like miniature replicas of human furniture made especially for dogs.
When choosing between sizes, keep in mind that your dog should be able to lie flat, completely stretched out on his side, without hanging off the bed. For smaller dogs, choose a bed that’s lower to the ground so he can hop in and out easily.
For an older dog, who may have arthritis or whose bones are just in need of a little extra TLC, you can purchase heated beds. If you live in a warm part of the country, you might want to consider a cooling bed to keep your pet comfy in the dog days of summer. Consider buying an extra cover for the bed so you have one to use when you are washing the other.
